ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Wood Library in Canandaigua is currently looking to make its 2,000 sq. ft. “Reading Garden” a reality.
A New York state grant kicked off the funding, supplying $173,059, but the rest of the funding comes from donations. This weekend, the library is hosting a weekend of mini golf to make it the rest of the way there.
First, a Friday mini golf night for adults — in the library itself — with tickets at $25 a person, and then and a family day on Saturday at $5 a person.
The project was originally proposed in 2020 so the library could hold more events outside during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the library reaches their goal, they hope to start breaking ground on the project this upcoming fall.
Wood Library’s Executive Director Jenny Goodemote laid out the plans and the layout for the reading garden.
“We plan to have an outdoor children’s theater where we can hold outdoor storytime,” said Goodemote. “A pollinator garden, Native American plant garden. So we really want it to be more of an educational garden rather than just an outdoor space for people to enjoy.”
According to their website, “visitors to the garden will be able to access the library’s free WiFi. The pathways will be graded and designed to accommodate strollers, walkers, and wheelchairs. The garden will be illuminated with dark-sky compliant lighting and monitored by security cameras.”
