10th Annual Harbor’s Hero Run scheduled for Sunday, May 19
On May 19, Big Sky students will don capes alongside participating community members in the annual Harbor’s Hero 5K color run. Honoring Harbor deWaard, a Big Sky kindergartner who passed away in 2015, the run celebrates his amazing life in Big Sky, and raises money for Wellness in Action and the Harbor deWaard Scholarship Fund. The fund awarded its first full scholarship in 2015 to a Big Sky student to participate in Camp Moonlight’s summer camp program.
Off-season bliss: BSCO to host three free mindful meditation sessions
As Big Sky’s full-time residents revel in May’s quiet streets and warmer air, the Big Sky Community Organization will offer a space to gather and recharge. Dr. Jacquelyn Rinaldi, an author, teacher and therapist, will lead three guided meditation sessions, free and open to the community at BASE—no BASE pass is required. The Tuesday evening sessions will run from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. on May 14, 21 and 28.

A colorful journey
Montana-based children’s author visits Big Sky to share her newest picture book with local students and families. Janet Fox first began writing children’s books and young adult novels more than 20 years ago when her son was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, with the hope that her stories would help him learn to read better. She continued writing and honing her craft for years after her son had grown. Now, she’s an accomplished and award-winning author, and her son is too.

Vigilante Music Fest
One spring day in 1863, six men looking for their next big gold strike found it in Alder Gulch, William Fairweather, Henry Edgar, Thomas Cover, Barney Hughes, Micheal Sweeney, and Harry Rogers left Bannack, attempting to meet and travel with James Stewart’s Yellowstone Expedition, to find gold and establish town sites along the Yellowstone. The six were two days behind the main party and trying to catch up. An encounter with a Crow tribe that left them considering the best route back to Bannack, led them up into the mountains away from the Madison River. Fairweather and Edgar slipped their gold pans into the cold creek waters beside the spot they picked for that night’s camp. They soon realized they had discovered a rich deposit of placer gold in what Edgar would name Alder Creek. Discovery Park in Virginia City just so happens to lie along Alder Creek.

RiverView Apartments to take first occupants for summer
Two Big Sky Community Housing Trust buildings will open first, five Lone Mountain Land Company buildings plan to open in fall. Since various partners broke ground in May 2023, seven buildings have sprung up along the south side of Montana Highway 64 (Lone Mountain Trail), called the RiverView Apartments. The first pair of buildings will house local workers this summer.
Bear attack survivor tells story for first time since major reconstructive jaw surgery
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Rudy Noorlander survived a grizzly bear attack in Big Sky, Montana, despite having his jaw bitten off and suffering other severe injuries. Big Sky is about 51 miles north of Yellowstone National Park along the Gallatin River.
