Blythewood girls repeat 5A state title
COLUMBIA – Back on top. Blythewood High School’s girls track and field team has officially cemented their place in the history books as back-to-back 5A State Champions. It was not unexpected. Coming off of their 2023 state title, the Bengals opened the 2024 season with a first place finish at the Diamond Hornets Invitational in early March. And they continued to dominate in meets throughout the season, taking the 5A Region 3 title and claiming the Upper State title two weeks ago.
BHS senior named National Merit Scholarship winner
BLYTHEWOOD – Blythewood High School senior Eva Deanne Pendleton has been named a 2024 National Merit Scholarship winner. She will receive a $2,500 scholarship. The competition drew over 1.3 million high school juniors from more than 21,000 high schools. Pendleton was among 15,000 finalists to be named one of two 2024 National Merit Scholarship winners in Richland School District Two.
Redhawks have solid finish at 4A state meet; three clinch individual titles
COLUMBIA – Westwood’s boys and girls track and field teams wrapped the SCHSL 4A state meet just short of a trophy at Spring Valley on Saturday. The Redhawk girls finished in third place with a score of 57, behind State Champion Ridge View (75) and runner up West Florence (62). The boys came in fourth place with a team score of 52. Ridge View took first place with 84, followed by Northwestern (79) and West Florence (69).
Irmo police officer accused of domestic violence, preventing girlfriend from calling 911
IRMO, S.C. (WIS) - An Irmo police officer is accused of assaulting his girlfriend after a fight at his home in the New Friarsgate subdivision. Brandon McLaurin, 29, was charged with domestic violence in the second degree and domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. He was granted a $50,000 bond, according to inmate records.

Blythewood High School’s Eva Pendleton and Zachary Burnett are National Merit. Lexington-Richland School District Five is participating in the Summer Food Service Program during June and July. The program dates of operation will be June 10 through July 26 (all sites will be closed July 4 in observation of Independence Day).
