Onsted, MI – The Cambridge Township Planning Commission has been hearing more supportive comments during public comment segments of their meetings in regards to ordinance changes for quarries.

The vast majority of the public that attends meetings has been vocal in their opposition to the possible digging of a gravel pit off of US-12 near Killarney Highway. There has been an application filed to obtain a permit for the operation, but the Township placed a moratorium on all mining back in December, 2022.

Legal representation for Cambridge Township has said that the current ordinances are outdated…and the Planning Commission and Board of Trustees have been working through that process.

Legal council for SSP Leasing LLC is attempting to bring the township to court to allow their permit application to be considered under the guidelines that were in place when they applied. A hearing is scheduled for June 12th at 3:30pm in the Courtroom of Lenawee County Circuit Court Judge Anna Marie Anzalone.

Cambridge Township Planning Commission Chairperson, Tom Kissel, talked to WLEN News Director Ian Wendt after their recent meeting about the positive comments he has been receiving from the public in attendance at the meetings…
