The Caledonia Area Warriors boys basketball team started off the week with a big matchup against the La Crosse Central Riverhawks, and ended the week with the Winona Cotter Ramblers.

The Warriors won a well played and tough game against the Riverhawks by a score of 71-64, and they prevailed against the Ramblers by a score of 70-57.

The Warriors hosted the Riverhawks on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Caledonia Area High School. Caledonia and Central fans packed the gymnasium for this exciting matchup, and the game did not fail to deliver a challenge for the Warriors.

Mason King (No. 5) started off scoring for the Warriors with a three after Ethan Stendel (No. 14) won the tip. Central would fight back, and Caledonia would have some struggles shooting in the first six minutes of the half. At 12:00, Caledonia would see a 10 point deficit of 19-9.

Not to be out done at home, Caledonia also showed grit and fought back – getting to within 6 by 9:30, but Central once again brought the lead to 11 with a score of 15-26.

Central’s offense was very patient, and their strategy looked to find mismatches as much as possible. Caledonia’s conditioning and good defense nullified that strategy to a great extent throughout the game.

Caledonia once again battled back throughout the back end of the first half – big threes from Mason King and Garrett Konz (No. 10) helped to fight back. With a minute and a half left in the period, Caledonia tied the game up at 32. By the end of the half, the score was 33-34, and Caledonia had shown toughness and grit to come back.

The second half saw the Warriors get into foul trouble early. Reid Klug, back in the lineup, scored first in the second half and the Warriors evened up the score at 37 by 16:00.

Mason King had hit threes from way behind the arc, and that continued into the back end of the game as well. After going up 3 on a Mason King three pointer at 13:00, a scoring drought ensued for the next three minutes until Central hit a two pointer to make the game 42-43.

From this point on, the Warriors were relentless from beyond the arc, with Mason King, Garret Konz, and Ben Stemper (No. 0) cruising on all cylinders, bringing the score to 58-47 by 3:30.

Near the end of the game, the Riverhawks tried to make the Warriors win from the free throw line by fouling, but it was not enough to catch up to the Warriors, who would win in the end 71-64.

Top scorers for this game included Mason King with 23 points, and Garrett Konz and Reid Klug with 18 points each.

The Warriors also visited Winona Cotter on Friday, Feb. 2 for a face-off in Winona. Caledonia would go up 38-24 in the first half, and pull away with the win, 70-57.

Top scorers for this game were Reid Klug and Garret Konz with 15 points, and Mason King with 10 points.

Next up for the Warriors is a game at Fillmore Central on Thursday, Feb. 8, and a rescheduled affair against Onalaska on Feb. 10.
