CACHE COUNTY – In the wake of the long anticipated resignation of Cache County Clerk/Auditor Jess Bradfield, the Cache County GOP is moving swiftly to replace him.

County Republican Chair Geoff Cox has called a special election for that purpose on June 28 at Mount Logan Middle School.

Credentialing for the party’s faithful will begin at 6 p.m. with the election to fill that vacancy in the Cache County government to begin at 7 p.m.

The filing period for would-be candidates will open Tuesday, June 6 at 5 p.m. and close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, according to Cox.

Candidates must meet the qualifications outlined in Utah Code 20A-9-201 for the clerk/auditor’s position.

Specifically, a candidate for the post of county clerk/auditor in the GOP special election must be a U.S. citizen; a registered voter in the Cache County; a registered member of the Republican Party; and never convicted of a felony, except under special circumstances.

Cox adds that the candidate who wins the special election will serve out the remainder of Bradfield’s four-year term, which began in January of 2022.

A formal declaration of candidacy can be found on the Cache County GOP website at https://www.cachegop.com/.

Would-be candidates can submit their applications to Geoff Cox, Cache County GOP Chair at P.O. Box 43, Logan, UT, 84323. If submitting an application electronically, a signed paper application must also be submitted to the same address prior to the filing deadline on June 22.

Bradfield resigned effective on Sunday, June 4, after an eventful term in office.

In his letter of resignation, Bradfield claimed credit during his term of office for constructing a nationally recognized ballot-processing center; formalizing county audit processes; making county audits public; modernizing clerk processes; meeting state ballot-tracking requirements; establishing a dedicated tax relief office; and other accomplishments that he shared with members of the clerk/auditor’s office staff.

But Bradfield’s tenure also saw a mass exodus of staff members hired by former Clerk/Auditor Jill Zollinger and turbulent relations with some members of the Cache County Council.

Bradfield’s chief deputy Bryson Behm is expected to be among the candidates for the special election.
