Remains of NC sailor who died at Pearl Harbor finally coming home

The remains of a North Carolina sailor who died during the Pearl Harbor attack will return home next month more than 83 years after his death. Petty Officer Neil Frye, a Hoke County native, was lost when the USS West Virginia was sunk by Japanese aircraft on Dec. 7, 1941. Frye's remains were recovered during salvage operations but were not positively identified until last September. He will receive full military honors during his burial ceremony at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake. The service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on April 3.

Carteret County beach parking fee increases

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WITN) - If you’re heading to Atlantic Beach you’ll be paying more to park in just a few weeks. Between April 1 and September 30, Atlantic Beach is increasing their beach parking rates from $4.00 an hour to $5.00 and decreasing their parking timeframe by an hour from 9 am-6 pm to now 9 am to 5 pm; all to generate more funds to maintain beach services.

Country music star Eric Church is making headway on his promise to build 100 homes for the people of Avery County in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Through his charity Chief Cares, Eric Church will build homes for 100 North Carolina families displaced by Hurricane Helene last year. The nonprofit has purchased land in Avery County that will eventually be a brand-new neighborhood with 40 to 50 homes for displaced flood victims.
