CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Welcome June and the return of the Great Geauga Antique Market at the Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton. This year’s first show is June 10, with early buyers welcomed from 8 to 10 a.m. for $25 admission. General admission gets under way from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a $10 fee. Discounted general admission is available from 1 to 4:30 p.m. for $5.

You will find antiques and vintage items around the racetrack and within the buildings; even the lawn gets to be a showcase. Plan on spending the day, and hope the weather cooperates!

Food concessions will be available inside and out. Bring a wheeled shopping cart or recyclable bags for ease in carrying your treasures. Furniture buys come with assistance in loading when needed.

Maybe you’ll find some folk art, which has been a mainstay in our modern world. The simplistic oil landscapes by Grandma Moses captured everyone’s trained eye. Even early examples of lacquerware had an influence of English and Russian craft.

The term “japanning” refers to the many layers of lacquer that produce a glass-like reflection. Floral illustrations as well as portraits were most popular. Today, these icons of art have historic value.

One very old remembrance can be found on ancient stone carvings. Colonial grave markers, depicting their original folk art design, were etched to tell their own tale. A record written in stone for the centuries to reveal!

Hi Brenda,

I have a very old jewelry container with embossed decorations and a lovely angelic picture. I have had it for years and was wondering about the age and value. It is a family piece, so it will be passed down.

Hi Jane,

Your interesting decoupage-style box with the raised accents is a lacquer keepsake box.

These were very popular in the late 1800s to early 1900s. They could be placed on a dresser or held within a drawer. The condition is excellent and would carry a value of $65. It might be a good idea to write the provenance and enclose it for your family!
