Dangerous Chester railroad crossing gets major fix
A long-considered dangerous railroad crossing in Chester is about to get a makeover. In a joint statement Friday, Aug. 14, Virginia Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced that the oddly shaped crossing on Curtis Street is getting $2.3 million for a redo. The funding will pay for an entirely new grade separation at the point where Curtis Street meets West Street. It will replace the crossing where motorists have to take two sharp curves and climb a short, steep incline to get over the two tracks atop it. The tracks are part of a main north-south Amtrak line connecting points along the East Coast, including Petersburg and Richmond. The crossing is particularly treacherous for tractor-trailers and other low-clearance vehicles that use Curtis Street. In 2018, a big rig trying to cross the tracks got stuck and was eventually hit by a train. The truck's passengers were able to escape, but the accident highlighted ongoing concerns about the safety of the crossing. The last recorded fatality at the crossing was in 2014. In 2020, The Progress-Index captured the scene after a Honda vehicle was struck by a train as it attempted to go over the tracks. It is part of

These Richmond streets are getting the most safety upgrades
Richmond is rolling out more than 700 safety improvements over the next two years as part of its push to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. Why it matters: The changes will touch hundreds of intersections across the city's High Injury Street Network, potentially changing how drivers, pedestrians and cyclists navigate Richmond's roads. The latest: Richmond's Department of Transportation announced this week that it plans to make quick-build improvements at roughly 350 intersections starting this fall, followed by another 350 in fall 2027. Roughly 81% of fatal and serious-injury crashes from 2023 to 2025 occurred at intersections, per Richmond's in-the-works update to its Vision Zero plan. Zoom in: The federally funded projects, shown on a new neighborhood-by-neighborhood dashboard , include adding high-visibility crosswalks, refreshed pavement markings, and other changes designed to force drivers to make slower, tighter left turns. The city hasn't released a cost total but says the treatments are relatively inexpensive and can reduce crash risks without waiting for larger street reconstruction projects. By the numbers: Richmond hasn't yet publicly shared all of the intersections slated for improvements. An Axios review of the existing 244 locations found the biggest concentrations along: Forest Hill Avenue : roughly

New Speed Bump On Idlewood
Drivers on Idlewood Avenue are adjusting to a new bump between S. Linden Street and South Pine Street. Believe it or not, this speed bump was originally requested as speed calming measure about a decade ago on behalf of the nearby St. Andrews School. For whatever reason, other speed bumps were installed on South Laurel Street, South Pine Street, and South Cherry Street before this one.
