After dropping their season opener to Lindbergh by a single run, the Highline Pirates girls varsity softball team has ripped off eight consecutive victories, establishing themselves as a force in the league.

The early loss to Lindbergh (5-6 on March 15) served as a wake-up call for the Pirates, a young squad boasting only five returning varsity players.

However, under the guidance of head coach Sarah Calderon and co-captains Mar Ramirez and Ashley Castro, the team quickly developed a strong chemistry.

The turning point for Highline came on March 27, when they defeated league rival Sammamish 14-6 in a lightning-delayed contest. The victory held extra significance, as Sammamish had dominated the league for the past two seasons, losing just one game and besting Highline in both championship appearances (2022 & 2023).

“I speak for the whole team when I say it was an emotional win, and we were so proud of ourselves for finally coming out on top against a team we have always held so much respect for,” Sheridan Hammons told The B-Town Blog.

The Pirates currently sit atop the standings and look to extend their win streak to nine when they face Foster on Wednesday.

Their success can be attributed to a blend of youthful energy and veteran leadership, a combination that has propelled them to the top of the league.

“The main reason this season has been so amazing is that we are a young team, with only 5 veterans on varsity with 7 underclassmen,” Hammons said. “It’s always so hard trying to create chemistry when new talent comes into a program. Our head coach, Sarah Calderon has done an amazing job, along with my Co-captains Mar Ramirez and Ashley Castro, to connect us all and lead us through this victorious season.”
