Thunderous winds to subside Sunday, peak gust of 73 mph in North Tonawanda

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - As promised, thunderous winds slammed the Buffalo-Niagara and Western New York region late Saturday and overnight into Sunday morning.

While it will remain windy through midday Sunday, the ferocious winds that led to power outages and downed trees are expected to diminish throughout the day.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo reported multiple wind gusts in the 60 to 70 mph range from the Lake Erie shoreline across the Niagara Frontier, including Niagara Falls, Buffalo and Rochester.

In North Tonawanda, National Weather Service meteorologist Philip Pandolfo reports a peak gust of 73 mph. 68 mph was recorded at the Buffalo airport and along the Buffalo waterfront, the peak winds were recorded at around 10 pm with a gust in excess of 60 mph.

Both National Grid and NYSEG are dealing with scattered power outages spread across the region. You can check the outage locations and estimated restoration times below.

Pandolfo tells WBEN Niagara County and portions of northern Erie County were particularly hard hit with tree damage from the punishing winds.

As the winds diminish, some spotty and light rain and snow showers are forecast for the region with generally improving conditions throughout the day Sunday.

The High Wind Warnings for the Buffalo metro area have expired and Wind Advisories remained posted until 11am for the eastern portion of Western New York in Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming and Allegany counties.
