Beginning Tuesday, drivers on the south side of Buda will have a straight shot from FM 1626 to I-35.
The new extension also means downtown Buda roads will be less crowded. The project along Robert S. Light Blvd. has been in the works since 2021. The road runs from I-35 through a well developed area south of Buda to FM 967. The new extension takes it another two miles west to FM 1626.
The groundbreaking was welcomed by the folks who live in Northern Hays County as it gets them right on over to the interstate. Large trucks can now get to and from the quarries without congesting downtown Buda.
Mark Jones, a former Hays County Commissioner, highlighted the significance of this project, saying, “80 percent of our population in Buda and Kyle commute to Austin to work every day, so it’s a huge project for us.”
The addition also connects with FM 2770. When I-35 is shut down due to crashes, this new extension will make it easier to detour to MoPac via FM 1626 and S SH 45.
