Kentucky Board of Education approves accountability regulation amendment, sending it to public comment

(FRANKFORT, KY) – During the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) meeting Oct. 7-8, members approved amendments to Kentucky’s accountability system regulation. The amendment to 703 KAR 5:270 comes after years of work by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and many different stakeholder groups from across Kentucky to design assessment and accountability systems that are meaningful and useful to all learners. This work led to the passage of House Bill 257 during the 2026 legislative session, which provides districts with the flexibility to work more closely with their communities to establish priorities for their schools and help ensure all students have access to vibrant learning experiences.

KY AG: County money may be used for resource officers at public, private schools

Money from a county’s general fund may be used to employ and station school resource officers at both public and private schools in the county, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman’s Office said in an opinion released Tuesday. The sheriff’s office may also request reimbursement from both public and non-public schools at a percentage of the out-of-pocket costs of employing and stationing a school resource officer at the schools, the opinion written by General Counsel Christopher L. Thacker said. Kentucky courts have repeatedly upheld the use of public funds to benefit students attending non-public schools, so long as the funds serve a public purpose and any benefit to the schools is indirect, the Oct. 12 opinion said. The opinion was written in response to Boone County Attorney Jordan Dallas Turner asking: “Can county funds be used to cover out-of-pocket costs incurred by a sheriff’s office in providing school resource officers to both public and non-public schools? Moreover, can a sheriff’s office request partial reimbursement at the same rate from both the public and non-public schools at which a school resource officer is placed?” The Boone County Sheriff’s Office currently contracts with its local school districts to furnish schools with school resource

Funeral arrangements announced for KY high school football player who died suddenly

A local funeral home has announced the arrangements for a Kentucky high school player who died from a medical emergency last week. Jamaree Johnson, 17, was pronounced dead late Friday night at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Boyle County Coroner Eric Guerrant said Jamaree’s death appeared to be related to a medical emergency . Jamaree’s funeral will take place Saturday, Oct. 17, at Centenary Methodist Church in Danville. He will be buried at Springhill Cemetery in Perryville following the funeral, according to his obituary. Visitation will take place before the funeral from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centenary Methodist Church, according to the obituary. A GoFundMe has been created to raise money for Jamaree’s funeral expenses. The online fundraiser has collected nearly $30,000 as of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. An autopsy was conducted on Jamaree’s body Sunday, which revealed that he had an enlarged heart .
