WEST UNION, W.Va. (WV News) — The Buckhannon-Upshur boys track team enjoyed a successful outing at the 10-team Doddridge Season Opener meet on Friday, claiming 10 event wins and breaking three meet records on their way to collecting a second-place overall finish with 167.75 points.
The Buckhannon-Upshur boys only finished behind host Doddridge County, who took the meet’s top team honors with 189 points.
Fairmont Senior (107) earned a third-place finish with Philip Barbour (56.75) and Lewis County (42) rounded out the top-five placing boys teams.
Taiwo Thropp kicked the meet off for the Buccaneers in the 100 meter dash, collecting the win with a blazing fast time of 11.39 seconds before collecting his second individual win of the meet in the 200-meter dash, setting a new meet record time of 22.64 in the process, surpassing the old record time of 23.30 seconds, set by Freddy Canary back in 2015.
Shawn Blandino earned the Buccaneers third win in as many events, delivering a time of 52.10 seconds to win the 400 meter dash.
Jordan Gillum posted a time of 2:03.75 to run away with the victory in the 800 meter run.
Carter Zuliani began the day with a fourth-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (17.94) before breaking through with a win in the discus throw with a heave that traveled 126 feet, four inches.
Chase Hackett took third in the 300 meter hurdles (44.18) before wrapping his day up with a runner-up finish in the long jump after a leap of 19 feet, 2 1/4 inches.
Savion Farmer opened the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 100 meter dash (12.41) and ended it with a third-place finish in the high jump after successfully clearing the 18 feet, 2 1/2 inch mark.
Several other Buckhannon-Upshur boys posted notable individual finishes with Timothy Snyder taking seventh in the 100 meter dash (12.32), fifth in the 200 meter dash (24.98) and 11th in the long jump (16 feet, four inches), Joey Nolte earning an 11th-place finish in the 800 meter run (2:25.84) and fourth in the 3200 meter run (11:23.08), Jack Waggy finishing fifth in the 1600 meter run (5:02.92), Malaki Williams with a fifth-place finish in the high jump (five feet, four inches), Reis Leonard placing sixth in the 300 meter hurdles (45.76), Owen Cutright with a sixth-place finish in the 3200 meter run (11:30.96), Randy Beckner taking seventh in the 1600 meter run (5:15.59) and Ely Cain finishing seventh in the high jump (five feet, two inches).
The Buccaneers were dominate in relay races, winning all five events while setting two meet records.
The Buccaneers’ 4x100 meter relay pairing of Bryson Johnston, Blandino, Landon Marple and Farmer combining to post a new meet record time of 45.87 seconds, improving on the mark of 46.21 seconds previously set by Buckhannon-Upshur’s team of Taiwo Thropp, Blandino, Farmer and Sterlin Thropp set last season.
The Buckhannon-Upshur boys continued to roll in the 4x200 meter relay as Johnston, Marple, Taiwo Thropp and Williams combined to post a time of 1:36.19 to collect the Buccaneers second straight relay win.
The 4x400 meter relay saw Blandino, Gillum, Leonard and Taiwo Thropp cruise to a victory, setting a new meet record time of 3:39.57, topping the previous record time of 3;42.84 set by University back in 2003.
In the 4x800 meter relay, Gillum, Leonard, Alex Sappey and Waggy claim the Buccaneers fourth straight relay win with a time of 8:40.11.
Buckhannon-Upshur’s 4x110 meter shuttle hurdles team of Hackett, Leonard, Zuliani, and Zade Woody closed out the Buccaneers relay race dominance with a win after crossing the finish line in 1:03.91.
Following a successful outing at the Doddridge Season Opener, the Buccaneer track teams are set to return to Tennerton for a home meet on Tuesday starting at 4:15 p.m.
