Outdoors: Young hunter's skill, ethics make a grandpa proud
When Mason Williamson felled a massive 17-point buck in Defiance County during Ohio's recent youth gun season for white-tailed deer, he was not the happiest hunter in the woods that day. He also was not the most emotional, nor the most proud, nor the most sentimental. Those labels all were attached to Mason's grandfather and mentor during that hunt, Doug Bunn. “He listened to me and he did everything I told him to do. He listened perfectly,” Bunn said. “Once I saw that deer I knew it was the biggest buck in the woods and I am just so happy it was him that had that opportunity. I'm so glad he got it.” What the 10-year-old hunter harvested is a very mature buck with a 17-point non-typical set of antlers. Bunn believes the deer likely lost a point or two during rutting battles with other bucks in the ongoing whitetail mating season.
