Welcome to the weekly Brunswick Today newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Renee Spencer. I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend despite the rainy weather. While Friday and Saturday weren’t very good days to be outdoors, they were great days to get out and try some of the county’s great restaurants and shop around in our stores and boutiques.

Here we grow again

As Brunswick County continues to grow by leaps and bounds, some areas previously considered “the country” are now exploding with development. That’s the case for Hickman Road. This road, which runs from U.S. 17 to the South Carolina border, will soon be flanked by hundreds of homes. Find out more in this story by StarNews reporter Jamey Cross.

The agenda

For months, Brunswick County commissioners and staff have been prioritizing the county’s needs and planning the budget for the 2024 fiscal year. Now, it’s decision time. A public hearing on the proposed 2024 budget is scheduled for 1 p.m. on June 5, but before you go, be sure to read the story by StarNews reporter Jamey Cross highlighting some of the key items.

Getting to know: The Kormans

Before they moved from New York to Leland, Brandon and Deena Korman started pondering a career change. That journey led them to become the owners of four restaurants in the Tropical Smoothie franchise, including the restaurant in Leland and the recently-opened one in Shallotte. StarNews dining reporter Allison Ballard has the details.

If you’re looking to experience a bit of culture this week, Sunset River Gallery is the place to be on Friday. The gallery will host the Hearts + Arts Fundraiser benefitting Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. In addition to taking in some beautiful art, attendees will enjoy live jazz, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a wine bar, and a silent auction. StarNews reporter Cheryl Whitaker has the details on this event and several others happening this week in her story detailing Brunswick’s happenings.
