One of the great privileges I’ve ever had in my life was in 2008 when I was the play by play man for the LADY Jackets when they won the National Championship up in Hope, Michigan. What a thrill it was for me and I could probably say the same thing about the coaches and the girls and the whole traveling party. It was unbelievable and I never will forget the young ladies like Stacey Blalock, Hope Hohertz, Kim Hoffman, Stephanie Brewer, Makiesha Davis, Mionca Hall, Elaine Hobbs, Sarah Pfiester, Daphnie Pippins, Katy Sarem, Tiffany Warner and what was that little short girl’s name – oh yeah, I remember, Meia Daniels. All Meia did was get Player of the Year honors and All American first team. Chris Kielsmeier got Coach of the Year, and so forth and so on.

Brownwood Youth Baseball hosted its “Baseball Night” on Memorial Day at the Massey Sports Complex, which featured T-ball, 8U, 10U and 12 games, along with free watermelon, free hot dogs and a bounce house. The event was sponsored by Sliger’s Market and Cornerstone Pet Hospital.

Donald Frye Jordan, Jr., (Doc) passed away peacefully on Friday, May 26, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born on July 29, 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 90 years old. Don moved to Brownwood as a young boy and graduated from Brownwood High School. He attended Texas A&M and was a member of the Aggie Corps of Cadets and a member of the cross-country track team. After graduating from Texas A & M in 1954, he joined the Army and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany for two years. Following his service, he returned to Brownwood. Don met his future wife, Carol Conway, on a blind date and they were married shortly after.

Fredric James Hughes, age 87 of Zephyr, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood. A Celebration of Life for Fredric will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the Zephyr Community Center in Zephyr, Texas. Burial will be private at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.

At 6:50 a.m. Friday, May 26, the Brownwood Fire Department responded to a call of a structure fire at 2801 Southside Drive, Apt. 104. Upon arrival the fire was contained to the interior of the structure and attic area. This is a six unit apartment building with only one unit being effected by fire. The occupant was not living there due to roof damage from a previous storm. Firefighters extinguished the fire on the second floor of the apartment. Firefighters then ventilated smoke from the apartment building and performed overhaul checking for fire extension. The fire is under investigation and started in the second floor rear bedroom. There were no reported injuries.

On Thursday, May 25 at about 10:06 a.m., Deputy Chris Williamson was dispatched to a suspicious call located at the 9000 block of CR 257, Brownwood. Unknown suspect(s) removed the lock from the west gate at 10 Mile low water crossing for the Pecan Bayou crossing. Information was gathered, and a report was made.
