Jail inmate dies from suicide shortly after being convicted for rape

A man awaiting sentence for sexual assault died on Thursday, six days after he was found unresponsive in his jail cell.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that John Gregory Maio, 60, of Brookston, was found hanging in his cell during a routine check at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 10, three days after he was convicted by a jury of 1st and 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct, and threats of violence.

Lifesaving measures were started and Maio was taken to Essentia Health, but died on Thursday morning.
