Two people were injured Wednesday morning when fire ripped through a house in Ogletown.

The blaze broke out around 7:15 a.m. in the unit block of Augusta Drive in Chestnut Hill Estates.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the house and an active fire in the basement.

Two residents, a 71-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman, were inside at the time of the fire but were able to escape. They were both taken to Christina Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and were listed in serious but stable condition.

Firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company and several neighboring fire departments brought the fire under control within a half an hour.

The state fire marshal determined that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning portable heater in the basement of the home. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
