Two men were shot and killed over the weekend in separate shootings in Brooklyn and Queens, according to police.
Around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, NYPD officers found 24-year-old Daequan Buckley with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen at the intersection of 54th Street and Church Avenue in East Flatbush.
He was taken to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Officers took two people of interest into custody, but did not make any immediate arrests, according to the NYPD.
Then, around 1 a.m. on Monday, police responded to another fatal shooting in South Ozone Park. NYPD officials said officers found an unidentified man with multiple gunshot wounds at the intersection of 117th Street and Rockaway Avenue.
He was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police made no immediate arrests and said they were working to notify the victim’s family before publicly identifying him.
More than 20 evidence markers were in place at the scene on Monday morning as police continued their investigation. While detectives canvassed 117th Street, some neighbors said the late-night shooting came as a surprise.
Vijayantie Ramjit said she heard several shots but didn’t immediately realize anyone had been hurt. “When I heard the shots and then I heard the sirens, I said, ‘Oh wow, it has to be someone shot,’" she said. "I never heard that before. Here usually is a good spot, quiet.”
Other residents complained about quality-of-life issues they said stemmed from a nearby nightclub, including increased traffic and drunken fights. Police officials at the scene confirmed the man who died had been inside the club on Sunday night.
Five other fatal shootings have been reported in the 67th precinct this year, which includes East Flatbush, according to police data compiled by Gothamist. One of the victims was 20-year-old Nathan Scott, who was shot and killed by police near East 57th Street and Linden Boulevard as he tried to shoot someone who had stolen his wallet, according to officials.
In the 106th precinct, which encompasses South Ozone Park, the only other fatal shooting so far this year was also by police, the data shows. Officers shot and killed 19-year-old Win Rozario in his home after the NYPD said he came at them with scissors following a 911 call he made during a mental health crisis.
Last year, 14 people were shot and killed in the 67th precinct, compared to one person in the 106th precinct, according to police data compiled by Gothamist.
