Police: 16-year-old girl, 17-year-old boy shot near Brooklyn subway station
The NYPD says two teenagers were shot steps away from a busy Brooklyn subway station Wednesday morning.
Law enforcement officials say the shooting happened just after 9:30 a.m. in front of 821 Franklin Ave. along Eastern Parkway outside of Wise Deli and Grill.
Police say one victim, a 16-year-old girl, was shot in the right leg. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the left leg. Both of the victims were standing inside of the deli when they were struck by the gunfire.
Both victims were transported to Kings County Hospital.
A Department of Education told News 12 that multiple schools, including Prospect Heights High School, went into a shelter-in after the incident but that has since been lifted.
"Nervous [about] how the world is changing," said Prospect Heights High School student Starlene. "I don't want this to happen, obviously, but it's out of our control."
Residents voiced concerns about gun violence here and across the United States.
"It's sad and it's scary, but unfortunately the situation we are in right now, in this country with gun violence, nothing surprises me anymore," said Ann Lieberman.
Police say they are searching for two suspects.
