Police shoot ‘disturbed man’ during knife-assault in the Bronx: NYPD

A knife-wielding man was shot and wounded by police officers Sunday after his dad reported he was having a “medical episode” and threatening to kill cops, authorities said.

Officers from the NYPD’s 52 Precinct went to the dad’s apartment building on Grand Concourse near East Kingsbridge Road around 10 a.m. and came upon his son — who came toward them with a large kitchen knife, Chief of Patrol John Chell said at a press briefing about the incident.

“The [911] caller, who was the father, describes his adult son as having a medical episode, describing he feels he’s being followed, persecuted and goes on to state: If any cops show up here today I will kill them,” Chell said.

Cops were met at the apartment by the dad and entered the vestibule — which is when the unhinged man came out, Chell said.

“He clearly becomes agitated when he sees the officers, drops a bag, produces a large kitchen knife and starts advancing towards the officers,” Chell said.

The officers opened fire after they repeatedly told the man to drop the knife and he did not comply, Chell said.

The cops provided aid and then called an ambulance, he said. The man, who wasn’t publicly identified, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police were reviewing footage from the officers’ body worn cameras of the 28-second incident, Chell said.
