A work of art by a senior from Broken Arrow High School will hang in the U.S. Capitol for a year.

Cadence Kinney's piece, 'Oklahoma Proud,' depicts a vibrant Oklahoma Rose and Scissor-Tailed fly catcher resting on a piece of wire.

Kinney chose this to fit with this year's congressional art competition theme: "Oklahoma."

"I decided to do the Oklahoma bird and that is the scissortail and then I decided to do more in the background with it, so it's not just one singular thing. And the state flower is the Oklahoma rose so I decided to do that," Kinney said.

She worked on the piece for the better part of a month.

"It was mainly done in pencil," Kinney said. "I started off with the bird first and then I went with the wire. I’d say the wire took the longest time because it was a twisting wire so it's definitely a little more complicated."

Kinney only applied because her art teacher, Brett Gray, told her to. But she said she never thought she would win.

"You give her the assignment and she will run with it. She is so talented and hardworking," Gray said.

"I didn't ever think my art was ever going to be good enough for that," Kinney said.

When she got a phone call from Representative Kevin Hern relaying the good news, she was in shock.

"I was really excited; I really didn't know what to say," Kinney said.

Kinney will have the opportunity to go see her piece on display this summer.
