More Snow for Tahoe? What El Niño could mean this winter
A potentially historic El Niño is strengthening in the Pacific Ocean, increasing the chances of a wetter-than-normal winter across much of California. Tahoe is in a cold snap this week, with temperatures dropping enough for snow to reach the area's mountaintops and for one ski resort to start snowmaking. But while the early taste of winter may have some residents wondering whether a big snow season is ahead, forecasters say it's too soon to draw conclusions from a single cold stretch. Federal forecasters favor above-normal precipitation around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada from December through February. However, while a strong El Niño can increase the likelihood of more winter storms, it does not guarantee a blockbuster snow season. In fact, the National Weather Service's winter outlook also favors above-normal temperatures around Tahoe this winter. Past El Niño winters in the Sierra have produced a wide range of outcomes, from exceptionally snowy seasons to winters with near-normal or even below-normal precipitation. Here's what to know about the Tahoe snow forecast for the season. What is the winter forecast for Lake Tahoe? The Climate Prediction Center 's report shows above-normal precipitation across most of California during December, January, and February. Southern

The Claw's return nears: How Sacramento crews are preparing for Super El Niño
Each fall city crews prepare the months-long grind of collecting thousands of tons of wet leaves, broken limbs and fallen trees to keep Sacramento’s streets safe. This year city officials are confident in their ability to manage the effects of the predicted Super El Niño, but are asking that residents do their part to prevent flooding. Sacramento’s tree canopy is one of the most iconic features of the city, but the lush greenery that provides relief from summer heat has drawbacks in the winter, particularly during harsh, stormy weather. “Sacramento is synonymous with the Claw and our trees,” Mayor Kevin McCarty said. “We want to make sure we have plentiful urban forest in Sacramento. But with that comes lots of leaves, and with big storms or atmospheric rivers, potential for massive havoc in the neighborhood.” During an atmospheric river in the first few weeks of 2023, more than 1,500 trees toppled throughout the city — smashing homes, splitting cars and killing two people living on the street . Cleanup took months. Fallen leaves from Sacramento’s one million trees also pose an issue. Wet piles of leaves in public right of ways reduce traction, posing a slippery risk to drivers, cyclists
