Sac State investigates student for chalking. Are protest rules chilling campus speech?
Weeks before graduation, on the day his solo exhibition at Sacramento State opened, studio art major Tyler Mickschl found himself fielding questions from a top administrator about an alleged disciplinary violation. Mickschl had been accused of chalking on the walls of an aging campus building as a silent protest against the art department’s neglected facilities needs. Chalking, per university rules that dictate when, where and how students can protest, is not allowed on walls and vertical surfaces. If proven guilty, 28-year-old Mickschl could be liable for thousands of dollars in repair costs, the administrator told him. A disciplinary notice said he could be denied access to campus, suspended or even expelled. Mickschl said he did not do it. He was singled out, he said, because he gave the student newspaper The State Hornet an interview in which he affiliated himself with the cause. After this experience, he will think twice before speaking up for something he believes in, he said. Another student in the art department, Stefani Figueroa, said she was now afraid of voicing her opinion and paranoid about punitive action from the administration. “They dragged me through the process to send a message,” Mickschl said. “It took a

UC Davis may develop new Lake Tahoe science and community hub. Here's where
UC Davis conducts year-round research at Lake Tahoe through its environmental center based in Nevada’s Incline Village. Now, the university’s Tahoe Environmental Research Center may get another home in Placer County’s Tahoe City. At a meeting Tuesday, the Placer County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a memorandum of agreement with the university to explore transforming three underutilized county-owned buildings in Tahoe City’s town center into a regional science, education and community hub. The county government and UC Davis will work together to evaluate if the project at the former Tahoe City fire station and surrounding properties is viable. In addition to advancing research, the county hopes the partnership will enhance public space, boost economic development and make science more accessible. “We all know that any time there is a university presence in a town or city, it’s great and there are always reverberating effects throughout the community and beyond,” Supervisor Shanti Landon said Tuesday. “This is a really great potential partnership, and I’m really excited about it. I’m looking forward to more as the community outreach happens.” The university and county will now conduct studies, gather community input and examine the long-term viability of the project before committing to renovation,
