BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio
Fraud: Royalton Road
On May 15, police were dispatched to Jersey Mike’s Subs regarding fraud.
An arriving officer talked to an employee, who said she had received a call earlier from someone saying they were with the FBI and investigating a fraud.
The caller requested that the employee remove, count and divide all large bills in the store’s safe into three envelopes of $500, $500 and $395 each.
She was also told not to tell anyone about what she was doing or risk serving 15 years in jail.
The employee wired the first envelope of money before her manager contacted her to say it was a scam. There are no suspects. Police are investigating.
Stolen gun: Ken-Mar Industrial Parkway
On May 15, police were dispatched to the Stonewall Range regarding a man attempting to sell a stolen gun.
An arriving officer talked to the caller, who said he contacted police after running the firearm serial number through the attorney general database. The Glock came back as stolen.
When told about the situation, the customer was shocked and disappointed, because exactly a year ago he had bought the weapon through a vendor, who shipped it to the Broadview Heights gun store.
Because he purchased it legally, the man wasn’t charged with receiving stolen property. However, the gun was confiscated.
A few days later, the officer talked to the vendor, who said they had received the gun through a Cleveland Metroparks’ buy-back sale last year.
The gun was returned to the original owner. The customer said he would contact the vendor for a refund.
