The US Coast Guard has deployed personnel in Pennsylvania to respond to the release of hazardous materials in Otter Creek, Bristol.

Local Coast Guard watch standers received a notification of the materials at around 11:40pm on Friday and were monitoring the situation on Saturday, officials said.

An estimated 8,100 gallons of latex finishing material had been released into the creek by Saturday afternoon, with the potential for the figure to climb to 12,000 gallons.

The source of the release has not yet been revealed but authorities said it has been secured and an investigation is underway.

Coast Guard personnel asked the public to stay away from the area while cleanup operations are underway.

“We are working with the responsible party and local and federal agencies to ensure a safe response effort,” said Captain Jonathan Theel, commander of Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. "We are also working with our State counterparts in Pennsylvania.”

The Coast Guard is coordinating with local and federal agencies to investigate the incident and said they had not received any reports of injuries or affected wildlife.
