Braintree to celebrate Greek Independence Day

BRAINTREE − A celebration of Greek Independence Day is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, at town hall, 1 John F. Kennedy Memorial Drive. The celebration will start in front of the building with flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies. It will then move inside town hall, where Greek dancing will be featured.

Greek Independence Day marks the start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, when Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire. The war ended in 1829, when Greece gained independence in the Treaty of Edirne.

Mayor Charles Kokoros is of Greek heritage. His father is from a village in Sparta.
