Put your money where your HVAC is: Energy-saving tips for summer

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It’s about to be summer time, so you might want to start checking on one of the most costly things around your house.

According to Shelley Lowe from BGMU, your HVAC unit accounts for around 50% of your home’s energy use , so as the heat rises, you may want to tap into your inner grill master.

Kim Phelps with Warren RECC said, “One of the best things that I love to say is go outside and grill. One thing that people don’t realize is things like your dishwasher, your oven, small appliances, warm clothes, dryers, washers. Those take up about 40% of your electric costs.”

Phelps said using the oven adds extra stress to the HVAC unit by making the house hotter, but if you do have to cook inside, you should think about the best time to do so and maybe consider some more economically sound appliances.

You also want to block out as much light as you can by closing blinds and curtains to keep out the sun, and if you’re really wanting to hold on to your money, make sure you’re getting routine HVAC service.
