Feed the Need surpasses 1 million total donations: 15 SoKY nonprofits collect 60k+ donations

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This past weekend, people and companies across SoKY donated to United Way of Southern Kentucky’s Feed the Need.

Tuesday, 15 nonprofits throughout seven counties picked up these generous donations. One of those stops was here at Bowling Green’s Salvation Army.

United Way’s 15th annual Feed the Need surpassed a huge goal.

“As of this year, we have crossed a million food items collected in the region for Feed the Need, since Feed the Need was started in 2009,” revealed United Way’s Communications Specialist Elizabeth Newbould. “So, that is a huge milestone that we’re pleased to announce, thanks to the generosity of those in our community.”

Calvary Care Center Food Pantry Director John Lawyer said this year’s Feed the Need, “certainly was very successful, and to see everybody stepping up and trying to help others, that’s what it’s all about.”

Lawyer says these food donations will help combat the growing food insecurity Cavalry Care Center sees at its food pantry.

“We service right around 200 people a month. That’s just the number of families that come, so actually, probably around 500 would be the amount of people. With all the rising prices for the grocery stores, with people still unemployed in the area, we are just seeing a great need in this area for help.”

Newbould said, “Seeing all the nonprofits come in to collect the food items, knowing that thousands of families in our community will now be able to get the food that they need to help others is something, that is indescribable.”

United Way tells us communities and local businesses donated over 60,000 food items this past weekend alone, and more pickup counts are still to come.
