Storm outages & inflation worry SoKY’s food insecure: ‘Feed the Need’ right now
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For its 15th year, United Way of Southern Kentucky is joining hands with local food pantries to Feed the Need. This weekend, especially right now, they need people to step up with donations.
“It’s our desire and our goal that no one goes hungry, especially a child, an elderly person. And that’s happening in our community today,” said United Way of Southern Kentucky President & CEO Debbie Hills. “By this time, very late February, March, the pantries are low again, and that’s just been incredibly magnified this year by inflation, by prices on the store and what people are dealing with. And then the windstorm just a few weeks ago made a situation that was already bad, even worse.”
“The St. Joseph SVDP Food Pantry in and of itself has probably seen a 40 percent increase in the number of families that they helped over the past two to three years,” said Bowling Green’s St. Joseph SVDP Food Pantry volunteer Dennis O’Keefe. “With this recent storm, we had people who had everything in their freezer gone. Your milk is gone, butter is melted. If you’re living on the edge, this just pushes you a little bit closer, and makes you a little bit more insecure, and a little bit more uncomfortable as to how are you going to take care of the family tonight or tomorrow morning.”
O’Keefe says that your donations in this annual Feed the Need drive are what will supply local families facing food insecurity until summertime.
“Everything that’s donated helps meet that need, and we thank everyone who participates over the next two days,” said O’Keefe.
Hills added, “I hope we all will remember how incredibly blessed we are and be willing to give a hand to lift someone up.”
