Authorities were at the scene of Bowie High School Wednesday after receiving reports of someone with a "long gun" near school property, police told 7News.
Bowie police responded to the Bowie Library in the 15200 block of Annapolis Road just before 12:50 p.m. to investigate the incident. Upon arrival, officers learned that the alleged gunman fled the scene in a dark-colored car.
Just 15 minutes late, police were alerted that an armed suspect was in the auditorium of Bowie High School. The school was subsequently placed on lockdown following the reports.
Multiple police departments were working together to locate the alleged gunman but he was not found inside the school, officials explained. Then, around 3 p.m., the suspect who was later identified as a 17-year-old student at the school, was found unarmed near the school grounds.
Bowie police said an airsoft pistol was later located which is believed to be what the student was carrying around earlier in the day.
There were no reported injuries to anyone during the incident.
Bowie Police Deputy Chief Dwayne A. Preston said these incidents are a "worst nightmare" for police departments to respond to and that they "breed fear in the community."
Preston explained that these incidents are becoming far too common in our society.
