A tractor-trailer hauling gravel along the Bourne Rotary on Tuesday morning struck a van and rolled, blocking a lane of traffic in the rotary and spilling gravel across the roadway, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Police responded to the Bourne Rotary’s right travel lane on Route 28 north, heading into the rotary, at 10:10 a.m. A 58-year-old man from Hyannisport was driving the 2007 Peterbilt-owned tractor-trailer, police said. The other vehicle involved was a 2017 Ford Transit van, driven by a 39-year-old man from Providence, Rhode Island.
The driver of the tractor-trailer swerved trying to avoid a van also driving on the rotary. With the sudden motion, the tractor-trailer rolled, and did end up striking the van. The gravel being transported spilled onto the road, and the tractor-trailer was left on its side.
Images from state police depicted heaps of gravel spilled across the highway and orange cones blocking off part of the rotary. The tractor-trailer involved was on its side, blocking part of the roadway.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to police, and neither were brought to the hospital. There were no other passengers in either vehicle. Police stated the tractor-trailer driver was cited for failing to yield.
The cleanup of the gravel and from the crash lasted over three hours, and the rotary is open to traffic as of Tuesday afternoon, police said.
