Members of the public will have the opportunity to view more than 50 prints from Shark’s Ink printmaking studio, learn about creating prints and experience a tour with the studio team at 1 p.m. Saturday at the University of Colorado Boulder Art Museum.
Shark’s Ink team members Evan Colbert and Roseanne Colachis will discuss the prints on display and printmaking processes in the exhibition. Legendary print master and Shark’s Ink founder Bud Shark and his wife Barbara Shark will also be at the event.
“Its a great opportunity to hear the show and to hear firsthand from the studio team,” said Hope Saska, chief curator and director of academic engagement at the art museum. “It’s really rare to have a whole studio team on site in an exhibition to talk about their work and answer audience questions.”
Shark’s Ink, the print publishing company in Lyons opened by the Sharks 47 years ago, has collaborated with more than 160 artists from the United States and Europe. The prints use unusual and inventive techniques with works in numerous collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.
Bud Shark said they work closely with artists to create prints at the studio. The art walk this weekend, he said, will be an opportunity for some artists’ work to be displayed.
“That’s what the event is about, to show the different kinds of prints and the artists who work with them,” Shark said.
Roseanne Colachis, who works with artists at Shark’s Ink, said there will be quite a large selection of artists and prints. In addition to the viewing portion, she said it has a strong educational component.
“It’s definitely educational, it’s all these wonderful artists that are shown there, and how prints are made, and a student or anyone can access this information,” Colachis said. “It’s a museum exhibition. People can learn how prints are made by going to the show and there are so many different styles (of art).”
In 2018, the CU Art Museum purchased the Sharkive (Shark’s Ink archive), a collection of post-war printmaking, featuring art from big-name contemporary artists. The archive includes editioned prints, production materials and various Shark’s Ink records. The team at the CU Art Museum is now beginning to unbox the prints after the pandemic.
“Onward and Upward: Shark’s Ink,” featuring 50 pieces from the vast collection, opened to the public at the CU Art Museum in September and will be on display through July 15. Members of the public can also view the archive online, make an appointment to see specific prints and attend future exhibitions.
Saska said the museum is planning fairly frequent exhibitions moving forward to show the more than 800 prints and related materials that are part of the Sharkive.
“It is just such a fabulous show,” Colachis said.
The event is free and open to the public, and after the tour, refreshments in the lobby will be available.
The event will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the CU Art Museum, 1085 18th St., Boulder. Attendees are asked to sign up for a reminder prior to the event. For more information or to sign up, bit.ly/CUSharkive.
