The Boston Red Sox have dealt with a number of key injuries to impact players to start their 2024 campaign, including right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock.

Whitlock originally landed on the injured list with a strained oblique back in April, but he was recently shut down after he had elbow soreness following his rehab start.

On Monday, manager Alex Cora had a negative update regarding this pitcher, telling reporters that he has ligament damage in his elbow, and surgery is an option.

“There’s damage in the ligament so there’s a possibility he’s going to get surgery,” Cora said ( via. MassLive ). “He’ll fly to see the doctor this week and they’ll go from there.”

If Whitlock were to undergo Tommy John surgery, it would be the second of his career and would knock him out for the rest of 2024 and potentially of 2025 as well.

Prior to suffering the strained oblique, Whitlock was looking great in his four appearances, posting a 1.96 ERA in 18 1/3 innings.
