The total number of people arrested during the Boston Police Department’s attempt to clear an encampment of Emerson College protesters from a public right-of-way early Thursday morning has climbed to 118, records indicated.

Officers responding to a slew of noise complaints stemming from a “Cease Fire in Palestine” protest at Boylston Street and Boylston Place found tents erected in violation of city ordinance and hundreds of demonstrators who were blocking sidewalks and harassing people as they walked by, according to a Boston police report.

“Some of these protesters even went so far as demanding that members of the public identify themselves before allowing them to pass down the pedestrian alley walkway into the Massachusetts State Transportation building,” officers stated in the report.

Body camera video released hours after the encampment was cleared showed Boston Police Captain Sean Martin explaining to the protesters that officers supported their right to protest and that they didn’t want to make any arrests, but that they needed to clear the sidewalk and walkway to allow people to pass without obstruction.

“We don’t want to arrest anybody. We support your right to protest. I’m indifferent,” Martin is heard saying in the video. “I don’t have a side either way. I want you to be able to do this peacefully...At this point it’s late. People live here. We’ve been getting a lot of complaints.”

Officers informed the students that the college did not solely own the alley they were in and that it had a public right-of-way under the jurisdiction of the Boston Police Department. Earlier in the day, the students were warned that they would be subject to “imminent law enforcement action” because tents were violating city code and becoming a fire hazard with students blocking doors, hydrants, and access to buildings.

Martin’s pleas to protesters to peacefully clear the walkway were met with loud chants of “Free, free Palestine!” from demonstrators using bullhorns in a residential area around 2 a.m., officers noted in the report.

“The protesters refused to move and take down the tents. In willful violation of the order, the protesters locked arms while seated and/or standing,” the report stated. “With an obvious police presence and despite numerous warnings, the protesters made no attempt to move form the line they had formed. Officers were then directed by Captain Martin to begin moving protesters and if warranted take them into custody.”

As officers tried to clear the alleyway, police said they were met with “passive, active, and violent resistance.” Dramatic video showed the moments when the protesters clashed with police after lining up and locking arms in the alleyway.

Four officers were injured in the clash, including one officer who suffered a broken ankle.

While 118 protesters were arrested on a charge of disturbing the peace, many expressed a desire to leave the walkway and were allowed to leave without being arrested, according to police.

Protesters were seen in zip-tie handcuffs being led into awaiting police vehicles after officers were able to subdue the crowd. By Thursday morning, a Boston Public Works crew had cleared all signs, tents, and garbage from the alley.
