Celtics recognize fallen Rockland soldier as ‘Hero Among Us’

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics will recognize a fallen Rockland soldier as the ‘Hero Among Us’ at tonight’s home game.

‘Hero Among Us’ was established by the Boston Celtics in 1997. The program recognizes outstanding individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to their communities.

Tonight the Celtics will honor fallen Army National Guard soldier, 21-year-old Matthew Pollini. In 2009, Pollini was tragically killed at Forward Operating Base Delta near al-Jut, Iraq.

After his passing, his fellow soldiers created the Specialist Matthew Pollini Memorial Fund to serve as a continuation of his life’s purpose, which was to serve those in need.

The goal of the Fund is to assist victims of natural and man-made disasters, as well as to assist military members that have been seriously affected by occupational hazards.

The Hero Among Us award is presented at every Celtics home game and pays tribute to the heroic achievements of these outstanding citizens.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
