A woman has been rescued from a burning home following a ferocious blaze in Boston.

The flames took hold at 3pm on Thetford Street in the neighborhood of Dorchester on Thursday, May 25.

Several fire crews attended the two-fire alarm in a bid to extinguish it and bring a female resident to safety. She was rushed to hospital but she and other locals are not understood to have been hurt in the dramatic incident.

Images taken at the scene, which was shared online, show firefighters blasting the frazzled building, charred black with smoke, with water hoses. The last remnants of grey, ashy fumes escape from the smoldering wreck.

The property has been completely destroyed and the front lawn has been affected too, with debris scattered across it. Workers were ordered to stay off the rear porches as they had been burned through.

"The heavy fire was knocked down," said a spokesperson for Boston Fire Department. "A quick aggressive attack helped to keep the fire contained to the rear of the building."

A day later, Commissioner Burke addressed the media as companies cleared equipment and The Boston Sparks Association rehabbed the crew. There were nine residents and one cat displaced altogether.

"Thank you to all the city agencies that made the scene operable and safe," a spokesperson added.
