BOSTON — It’s a display that will take your breath away.
“We didn’t know if it was flags or flowers, so we thought we’d come over to find out,” said Bob Furness, a Vietnam War Veteran. “It’s quite a significant display.”
On Boston Common, 37,000 flags are planted around the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial.
“Something just brought me here, something compelled me to come in to see this,” said Martha Murray, who drove in from Franklin to see the flag garden in person. “It’s awe-inspiring. I lost my brother about a year ago. He’s a Vietnam vet and he died of prostate cancer which was brought on by Agent Orange.”
Each flag represents a brave man or woman from Massachusetts who died serving our country since the Revolutionary War.
The Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund has organized the display every year since 2010.
Hundreds of volunteers help plant the flags, which draw big crowds in the days leading up to Memorial Day.
“We need to respect these people,” said Peter Murray, of Franklin. “We need to respect everyone who’s fought for this country because if they didn’t fight for it, we wouldn’t have what we have today.”
