Boston police arrested a 29-year-old man who was found 'violently' swinging a machete in the Downtown area.

The Boston Police Department said that officers were called to the area of Tremont Street and Winter Street just before 9pm on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, they discovered a suspect 'violently swinging' what appeared to be a machete. After talking the suspect down, he dropped the weapon.

Finalize the city’s new gun violence intervention strategy.

"Officers were able to quickly deescalate the situation, and safely place the suspect into handcuffs," police said. "As officers searched the suspect, they recovered a machete with a 10.75 inch blade and eight inch grip."

Police identified the suspect as Herve Masini of Roxbury.

Masini was placed under arrest and charged with unlawfully carrying a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct. He is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.

The incident comes amid a recent string of violence in Boston that this week alone has included a man being killed near a middle school in Dorchester, shots being fired at a busy city intersection in the middle of the day, and children ducking for cover amidst gunfire at a Roxbury park.

On Thursday, Mayor Michelle Wu announced a 'summer safety strategy' to try to reduce crime in the city.

"Our framework aims to acknowledge the root causes and social determinants of violence, while also proactively intervening in conflicts to prevent violence from occurring or escalating," Wu's office said.

The initiatives include trauma services and community health initiatives, scaling up youth and community activities, connecting people to intervention and recovery-oriented services, and finalizing a new gun violence intervention strategy for the city.
