Chilly weather gets the start on Opening Day at Fenway

BOSTON — Things get pretty quiet around Fenway during the offseason, but with opening day being as cold as it is, fans might be stocking up on extra gear to stay warm.

“The day is going to be really cold, so we’re curious to see how many people are able to come out, gear up in their warmest stuff, the heavy jackets, the blankets, and everything,” said Tim Pettite, the Pro Shop Manager at the Red Sox team store. “But we’re expecting a good turnout as always. And the people who show up on Opening Day--you only come if you feel there is a chance this season. You don’t come if you think this is a lost year, so we’re going to get people who are excited and ready to support the team.”

Tickets are still available for the home opener, either on the Red Sox website or ticket resale sites like Stub Hub. Businesses are excited to have the fans back and are hoping the team gives everyone something to cheer for.

“The team looks good, they had a pretty good spring training, and no matter what the team brings, opening day is a ritual for lots of people,” said Robert Onessimo, the Owner of The Best Sausage Company. “Everybody will be here.”

To celebrate opening day, there are always a lot of events planned leading up to the actual game and so fans will want to get inside early. Gates open two hours early for today’s 2:10 pm game. That’s because the Red Sox would like fans to be in their seats by 1:30 pm for the opening ceremony. After player introductions, there will be a flyover with fighter jets from Westfield. A giant American flag will be on the Green Monster as Springfield native Michelle Brooks-Thompson will sing the national anthem.

For those bringing a bag into the game, bags have to be single compartments as no backpacks are allowed. Exceptions are made for diaper bags and medical equipment.

One thing the Red Sox haven’t talked about for opening ceremonies is who is throwing out the first pitch. Usually, it’s someone significant, so fans will have to wait and see who that special guest is.
