Liverwurst may be on its way out. Will you miss it?

Boar's Head has announced it is forever discontinuing the venerable deli confection.

Boar’s Head, the Florida-based deli meat company, has had some problems of late. It turns out the company whose slogan is “Compromise Elsewhere” may have actually compromised a little bit when it comes to, say, plant cleanliness, or not selling liverwurst with deadly listeria in it.

The company’s latest attempt at damage control involves closing the Virginia plant where this summer’s listeria outbreak originated and, perhaps more surprisingly, discontinuing liverwurst as a product in the Boar’s Head line, now and forever. So if you’re a fan of liverwurst, one, be prepared that you may find it unavailable when you go into your local deli, and two, you’re a fan of liverwurst, seriously?

Boar’s Head getting out of the liverwurst game has got to be the biggest liverwurst-related development since Boston’s own William Underwood Company went defunct in 1982. Boston.com readers of a certain age will no doubt recall Underwood’s TV commercials for liverwurst, deviled ham and the like, which featured this kid, who was also in most other commercials produced in 1970s, apparently:

You can still buy Underwood products under the auspices of the multinational conglomerate B&G Foods, and it’s not like the venerable deli product (also known as “liver sausage,” for the non-German speakers among us) will disappear overnight. (And even if it does we’ll still have whatever this is.) But we can only assume that Boar’s Head’s exit from the market may spell the eventual end for liverwurst as a thing.

Which left us wondering: Will you miss liverwurst when it goes? (Remember, you can keep this completely anonymous and we won’t tell anybody.) And are there other deli meats (“meats”) that should follow liverwurst on the road to obscurity? (Tongue, we’re talking to you.)

Take the Boston.com poll below, or email [email protected], and we may use your response in an upcoming article.
