Bon Jovi also revealed which instrument Belichick can play.
Jon Bon Jovi’s Bill Belichick story from the 1990s: It’s well known at this point that Bill Belichick, despite the surly demeanor he projected for decades as coach of the Patriots, is also something of a music fan.
Specifically, Belichick is a Bon Jovi fan, given the frontman Jon Bon Jovi’s presence at several Patriots games (and practices) over the years.
In a recent interview with Julian Edelman’s “Games With Names” podcast, Bon Jovi offered a little more detail on Belichick’s musical interests.
“Few people know that he was a closet drummer,” Bon Jovi explained, catching Edelman — who spent years with Belichick — a little off-guard.
“Tico [Torres] gave him some lessons and we bought him a [drum] kit,” Bon Jovi recalled.
Beyond that, Belichick has spent time on tour with the band. Bon Jovi remembered one moment from a European tour in 1995.
“He came on the road with us, especially in Europe where he could come and hang for a week at a time,” said Bon Jovi. “We took him to Paris. We took him to Italy. We took him all around with us, and he was just on the plane. But getting to see him in our environment.”
Eventually, Bon Jovi noted that even in Europe, Belichick was still able to find a football connection.
“We were playing at the same stadiums as the Stones,” he continued. “It was ’95. So we went, and I took Bill. The Stones’ head of security, Bob Bender, was a great college football player. Bill saw him and immediately went over to him and said, ‘Great to see you.’
“So Belichick could now feel at home. And he was with us. And he was backstage at the Rolling Stones. For those who don’t believe those stories of that warm, wonderful side that I know of him is true, it is true. It’s all true.”
