Grace Lutheran Church — the current site viewed here from the south along King Street — has been a fixture in the Watauga County community since it’s first iteration in 1923.

BOONE — Capping a century of existence in Watauga County, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated a momentous occasion over the weekend — marking 100 years since its founding.

On Sunday, May 28, approximately 245 members packed into the pews for a special service to observe the landmark.

Rev. Bishop Dr. Tim Smith was the senior pastor at Grace Lutheran Church from 1993 until 2010, and returned to the 100th anniversary celebrations.

Pastor Steve Troisi has guided Grace Lutheran through a difficult time period during the COVID-19 pandemic — a trying time for all, but particularly community places of worship.

Covered with vines, the original chapel of Grace Lutheran Church used to have a tower offset to the side, that has since been removed over the course of renovations and expansions.
