A four-star football recruit for Alabama has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell.
Tony Mitchell is a defensive back who committed to the University of Alabama; his future with the tide is now in doubt.
Mitchell was reportedly driving to Panama City Beach when he and another man were pulled over in Bonifay, Florida last week by a Holmes County Sheriff's Deputy.
During the stop, deputies found a large bag of marijuana, a loaded gun, more than $7,000, and a set of scales in their car.
Both men were taken into custody.
Mitchell, who signed with Alabama last year, is charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell or deliver.
"Guys- everybody's got an opportunity to make choices and decisions, there's no such thing as being at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Head Football Coach Nick Saban.
Coach Saban took a hard stance saying everyone is responsible for their own actions.
"You gotta be responsible for who you're with, who you're around and what you do, who you associate yourself with, and the situations you put yourself in," said Saban.
Joshua Jones makes his living mentoring teens and pushes them to go on a path away from crime; he says Mitchell's situation is not one that is uncommon among youth,
"Everybody has choices in life. But it's the decisions that we live with that will affect us for the rest of our life and so we have to be mindful that we can't make permanent decisions on temporary feelings," said Jones
But how do we keep our youth on the right path? Getting kids connected to caring adults through mentorship.
"A lot of the times, the kids, the way that they view themselves is based off the way that people they value in their lives view them and if they're connected to individuals that make them feel valued that expect more from them, then in times when it comes down to decision making, they'll take that into account," said Jones.
