BOISE, Idaho — Boiseans rejoice! For this week, at least.

As of Monday, the average cost for unleaded gasoline decreased by more than 5 cents per gallon in the last week, according to GasBuddy's survey of 216 stations in Boise.

"Yes, gas prices are calm right now, but it's more like the quiet part of the movie before the 'Jaws' theme starts playing," said AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.

The average price for gas per gallon in the state's capital city is $3.91. Although the new average is 5.8 cents higher than one month ago, it is nearly $1.30 lower than one year ago. AAA Idaho calculated a slightly higher average for Boise at $3.95.

Historical gasoline prices in Boise and the national average going back ten years, according to GasBuddy data:

  • June 20, 2022: $5.21/g (U.S. Average: $4.97/g)
  • June 20, 2021: $3.41/g (U.S. Average: $3.05/g)
  • June 20, 2020: $2.37/g (U.S. Average: $2.12/g)
  • June 20, 2019: $3.11/g (U.S. Average: $2.66/g)
  • June 20, 2018: $3.15/g (U.S. Average: $2.87/g)
  • June 20, 2017: $2.66/g (U.S. Average: $2.28/g)
  • June 20, 2016: $2.51/g (U.S. Average: $2.33/g)
  • June 20, 2015: $3.02/g (U.S. Average: $2.80/g)
  • June 20, 2014: $3.65/g (U.S. Average: $3.68/g)
  • June 20, 2013: $3.80/g (U.S. Average: $3.60/g)

According to the GasBuddy study, the cheapest station in Boise was priced at $3.75 per gallon on June 19, while the most expensive was $4.19 per gallon - a difference of 44 cents. So be sure to check out KTVB's interactive map to find the cheapest gas prices near you.

Idaho:

While Boise's average price dropped by half a dime, GasBuddy quoted the statewide average only saw a 0.4-cent decline to $3.95, so essentially unchanged from one week ago. Again, AAA data showed a mild discrepancy to the Gem State's average price, reporting it to be $3.98.

GasBuddy found the lowest price in Idaho to be $3.69 and the highest price found was $4.49 - a difference of 80 cents per gallon. See KTVB's interactive map to find the cheapest gas in your area.

AAA Idaho data for average gasoline prices across Idaho:

  • Boise - $3.95
  • Coeur d'Alene - $4.04/g
  • Franklin - $4.12/g
  • Idaho Falls - $3.88/g
  • Lewiston - $4.05/g
  • Pocatello - $3.97/g
  • Rexburg - $3.96/g
  • Twin Falls - $3.92/g

"We anticipate a busy summer travel season, and with gas prices much lower than they were a year ago, more people will take advantage of a road trip or a family get-together. The lull in fuel demand that we're currently seeing is likely temporary," Conde said.

National:

Nationally, prices went down slightly, dropping 1.4 cents in just one week, ringing the national average of unleaded gas to $3.56 per gallon (GasBuddy) and $3.58, according to AAA. That new average shows a variation of roughly 3 cents from one month ago, however, it is much less than one year ago, $1.41 less.

The national average price of diesel gasoline fell 3.7 cents since last Monday, now standing at $3.85 per gallon. To compile national data, GasBuddy collects data from over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

"It has been a quiet week for the national average, with little overall movement in average gas prices nationally even as oil prices have been a bit unstable," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

"While gasoline demand continues to inch up, we could see additional pressure on pump prices, while the price of diesel continues to see downward movement," De Haan said.

"While the uncertainty over the direction of the economy is a major player in preventing oil's rise, inventories of oil and gasoline do remain tight, preventing much additional downward movement as well. We'll have to see which of those factors emerges as a winner to predict when the next large movement in prices could be," De Haan continued. "We're also seeing more tropical activity in the Atlantic that could pose challenges in the weeks ahead as hurricane season ramps up."
