Maddie May Day, designated May 25, is Mogen's birthday. To honor the memory of their beautiful daughter on what would have been her 22nd birthday, the Associated Press reported Mogen's parents' request to "celebrate her birthday by remembering the joy she brought others, not the grief created by her absence."

Following the Mogens' early-May announcement, #MaddieMayDay lit up social media. Stories of good deeds, acts of kindness, and people paying it forward started popping up the morning of the 25th.

There is not a monetary movement, there is no requirement to be anywhere or do anything specific. It’s beautiful in its simplicity. And yet it’s effective and powerful. -The Mogen Family

We're sharing ideas on how you can celebrate Maddie May Day in the gallery below.

On Nov. 13, 2022, Mogen, 21, along with Ethan Chapin, 20; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were murdered in their sleep in an off-campus apartment. The gruesome killing was one of the most shocking and talked-about tragedies of 2022. Accused murderer, Bryan Kohberger, a graduate student at Washington State University, faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in court this fall.
