The snowfall this March has been a little unexpected. The good news for ski resorts is that it's extended their winter seasons.
National Weather Service Boise recorded 0.8 inches of snow overnight (March 23-24). The snowfall adds up to a monthly total of 6.2, which currently puts 2023 as the 10th snowiest March in Boise's history.
Mountains have seen a lot of snowfall, boosting the snowpack but also the length of time ski resorts can remain open. Here's a look at several resorts/ski areas close to the Treasure Valley, and when they expect to close.
Please note, not all resorts have given closing dates for ski/snowboarding. Estimates are marked with *. Those estimates are from OnTheSnow.com. The high snowfall/snow depth totals in some resorts mean that they could extend their seasons.
BOGUS BASIN--April 16*
Bogus' website lists that they generally close in mid-April. However, last year after Bogus closed on April 18, a few surprise late snow days in May allowed the non-profit to open for a couple of days.
Given that Bogus' snow depth is extremely strong (93" as of 3/24), it's likely that the ski season could see an extension, but there's no official word from Bogus.
What we do know, is that night skiing is set to close soon. Bogus announced on its website that Night Operations will end Saturday, March 25.
TAMARACK--April 8th
Tamarack was expected to close at the beginning of April, but good snowfall has allowed the resort to remain open an extra week.
Lift operations will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and several trails will still be groomed.
BRUNDAGE--April 9th*
Brundage has not posted an official closing date, but their website reports strong snowfall allowing for more powder skiing.
Given the strong snow depth (78" base, 110" Lakeview, 140" summit), it's possible the McCall resort goes past its typical closing date.
SUN VALLEY--April 16th*, March 26th (Dollar Mountain)
Dollar Mountain at Sun Valley will close this weekend, and Sun Valley will have its pond skim event as well.
As for Bald Mountain, it typically stays open till mid-April. The snow depth at the base is 117", so it's possible Sun Valley extends its season similar to Tamarack.
SOLDIER MTN--March 25th
Soldier Mountain is having it's end-of-season party Saturday, March 25th. There's going to be a cardboard box derby and pond skim competition as well.
