'We wouldn't be here if we didn't': FAU men's basketball coach Dusty May says Owls have a shot to win NCAA Tournament
WELL, TODD, THAT IS THE UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY EXCITEMENT. THE CAMPUS IS ABUZZ. IT IS INSANE. EVERYBODY THAT WE STOPPED AND TALKED TO IS JUST THRILLED, EXCITED, EXUBERANT. AND OF COURSE, WE HAD TO STOP BY THE TRAINING FACILITY AND TALK TO THE MAN OF THE HOUR, DUSTY MAE. AND I ASKED HIM, TAD, WHAT I KNOW YOU WANTED TO ASK HIM. THEY’VE MADE IT TO THE FINAL FOUR. BUT IS THERE A SHOT THAT THESE OWLS CAN GO ALL THE WAY. HE WAS SHOT AT GOING ALL THE WAY. WE WOULDN’T BE HERE IF WE DIDN’T. COACH MAE SAYING PLAYERS WERE BACK IN CLASS AND PRACTICE LIKE ANY OTHER MONDAY. FOR THE MOST PART, IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL. WE HAVE A GAME SATURDAY, BUT THERE’S NOTHING USUAL ABOUT THAT GAME. VERY FEW TEAMS HAVE A CHANCE TO END THEIR SEASON ON A WIN AND WE’RE ONE OF THE FOUR THAT HAS THAT OPPORTUNITY. CONFETTI STILL IN THE PARKING LOT MONDAY AFTERNOON WHERE THE TEAM RETURNED HOME TO MILES OF OWLS FANS TO GREET THEM. BEEN VERY REWARDING TO SEE. OUR GUYS APPRECIATE IT FOR WHAT THEY’VE DONE FOR THIS UNIVERSITY AND THE COMMUNITY AND SEE PEOPLE RALLY AROUND THEM. THE WINDS BRING IN RECORD CUSTOMERS AT LOCAL RESTAURANTS, PRAISING THE ATMOSPHERE. IT’S AMAZING. THE BUSINESS IS GREAT. I MEAN, THIS PLACE, IT WAS FULL HOUSE AND THEN SOME. I MEAN, WE HAD PEOPLE OUTSIDE AND MORE ARE TRYING TO GET IN. ONE COACH CITING MORE POTENTIAL ATHLETES LOOKING SERIOUSLY NOW. A FEW. A LOT OF THE INTERESTED PLAYERS ARE COMING TO SCHOOL NEXT YEAR. IT’S INCREASING. THEY’RE ALL INTERESTED NOW. I’M GETTING MORE INTEREST. AND TODD, I HAVE TO JUST MENTION THE GIRLS LACROSSE TEAM THAT WE SPOKE TO IN THE PARKING LOT AS WELL, WHO SAID THEY PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD ON THEIR WAY BACK FROM A TOURNAMENT TO WATCH THE END OF THE GAME. THEY WERE SO EXCITED. SO SHOUT OUT TO THAT TEAM AS WELL. AND TO, OF COURSE, THE BASKETBALL TEAM. ONE TIP FOR YOU GUYS, ALL THE MANAGERS WE SPOKE TO NEAR ANY BUSINESS THAT’S SHOWING THIS EVENT THE NEXT GAME ON SATURDAY AT 6 P.M. SAYS MAKE SURE YOU GET THERE WAY AHEAD OF TIME. THEY’RE EXPECTING ANOTHER WEEKEND WITH RECORD NUMBERS OF CROWDS ON THE FLORIDA ATLANT

WPBF caught up with Florida Atlantic University's basketball head coach Dusty May at the training facility on the Boca Raton campus and asked if his Owls could take the tournament. He answered confidently, "We wouldn't be here if we didn't." May said players were back in class and practice like any other day."For the most part, it's business as usual. We have a game Saturday," he said. But there’s nothing usual about that game. "Very few teams have the chance to end their season on a win, and we are one of the four that has that opportunity," May said. Confetti still lined the parking lot Monday afternoon when the team returned home to mobs of Owls fans greeting them. "It's been very rewarding to see our guys appreciated for what they've done for this university and the community and seeing people rally around them," May said. The wins brought in record customers at local restaurants like Flanigan's, where one waiter said, during the last game, it was "crazy.""We had atmosphere. It was amazing," the waiter said. "The business is great." "We had a full house and then some," added Kyle, a manager at the restaurant. "People are lined up outside." That restaurant was one of many on both campuses reporting those record crowds. For the Owls' next game, Saturday managers suggest getting to your watch spot way ahead of that 6 p.m. start.Another impact of the team's success? More people are trying to get into FAU. One coach cited more potential athletes are looking seriously now at the university. "A lot of the interested players who were coming to the school next year — it's increasing. They're all interested now. I'm getting way more interest," said Dan Bouganim, a coach of the FAU ice hockey team.
