The Birmingham Water Works has spent more than $4.1 million over the last two decades to buy 15 lakeside cabins that the utility planned to destroy. The utility in 2002 began acquiring the cabins along Inland Lake in Blount County to clear the watershed of the weathered properties, saying they pose a threat of contamination to drinking water for about 770,000 customers in the Birmingham metro area.
